Dr. Sheffield has been proudly practicing comprehensive, broad spectrum family medicine for greater than 30 years, with more than 20 of them dedicated to a career in medical education.
A native of New England, he received his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania followed by medical training at the Medical College of Virginia and Family Medicine Residency at the St. Margaret Memorial Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
After capturing a wealth of clinical experience from his days working on an American Indian reservation, university group practice and his small private practice in New Hampshire, he returned to academic medicine and now benefits from skills developed through his many years as a family medicine residency program director. He is committed to the principles of a master adaptive learner, scholarly excellence and has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards in both resident and medical student education.
Areas of particular clinical interest include information mastery, evidence informed decision-making, inpatient family medicine, primary care procedures, care of socially disadvantaged populations, and the comprehensive care of patients, newborn to nursing home.
He believes that service to his patients and students is a privilege and is fundamentally meaningful. He states that success is achieved through consistent communication, teamwork, humility, kindness, work ethic, curiosity and a sense of humor.
Dr. Sheffield resides in the Downingtown, Pennsylvania community with his wife, Marsha, who is also a physician, and two very hungry cats. He has three sons and is proud of and amazed by their character and accomplishments. Given a free moment, he enjoys gardening, caring for his tropical fish, physical fitness, dreaming of national parks, and cheering for his robust list of favorite sports teams.
