Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Pharmacy Residency

Program Purpose Statement

The Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is a 24-month post-Doctor of Pharmacy training program that fulfills the requirements of both a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and a PGY2 HSPAL Residency. HSPAL residents will further cultivate their leadership and administrative skills by completing a two-year Masters of Science (MS) degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from the University of North Carolina (UNC), Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

PGY1 Year

During the resident’s PGY1 year, the individual will be part of the HUP PGY1 cohort to develop a solid clinical foundation. and service line knowledge.

PGY2 Year

In the second year of the program, the HSPAL resident will expand upon the competencies developed during the PGY1 residency, with an emphasis on cultivating advanced leadership skills essential for guiding patient-centered care and optimizing pharmacy operations. This training is designed to prepare residents for advanced managerial, supervisory, and leadership roles. Key areas of emphasis include strategic leadership, medication-use safety and effectiveness, quality assurance and improvement, human resource management, financial stewardship, and the integration of technology. Upon completion of the program, residents will be well-equipped to assume clinical or operational management positions within the pharmacy enterprise of a large academic medical center.

Masters Education

We are proud to partner with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy to offer our HSPAL residents a world-class didactic education that complements their onsite training at HUP. Our administration residents are part of the UNC master’s cohort, which includes residents from a diverse range of leading health systems, such as the University of North Carolina Hospitals (UNCH), Duke University Health System (DUHS), Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health (WFBH), Mission Hospitals (MH), Moses Cone Health (MC), BayCare Health System, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), University Hospitals Cleveland, and Novant Health.

Residents will attend classes remotely while based at HUP, actively participating in the program alongside their cohort. The master’s curriculum is completed longitudinally over the two-year residency and culminates in a thesis substitute—an applied, supervised project in health-system pharmacy administration that delivers meaningful contributions to HUP and the department. Additional details about the master’s component can be found on the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s website.
