About Dr. Boya

Dr. Mounika Naidu Boya is currently a PGY-1 Preliminary General Surgery Resident at the University of Pennsylvania. She grew up in Hyderabad, India, and graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar in 2023. During medical school, she completed clinical electives in colorectal, general, cardiac, and head and neck surgery across institutions including University of Illinois, Chicago, Cleveland Clinic, Florida International University, and OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. Following graduation, she pursued clinical and histopathological research in otology and facial nerve disorders at the University of Chicago and University of Illinois Chicago. She then contributed to vascular surgery research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. After completing her general surgery training, she plans to pursue a fellowship potentially in vascular surgery, while building a career in academic surgery focusing on translational research, innovation, and surgical outcomes.

Research

Mounika’s research interests lie at the intersection of vascular biology, coagulation science, and surgical outcomes. She is particularly drawn to improving perioperative risk prediction and optimizing long-term outcomes in patients with peripheral artery disease. Her recent work at Massachusetts General Hospital focused on the use of thrombin generation assays, thromboelastography (TEG), and platelet function testing to identify high-risk thrombotic phenotypes following revascularization. She has also conducted histopathological and radiological research on inner ear disorders and facial nerve disease at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Mounika’s projects have been presented at national surgical conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals, reflecting her long-term goal of building a career in academic surgery driven by data-informed, patient-centered innovation.
