About Dr. Carvalho

Juliano grew up in Brazil where medical school is six years long straight out of high school. He attended medical school from March 2013 to December 2018 at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Upon completing medical school, he started a research fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was part of Dr. Hartzell Schaff surgical outcomes research group in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Juliano worked at the Mayo Clinic from February 2019 to May 2020, and during his time at the Mayo Clinic he also completed a Postdoctoral Certificate Program in Clinical and Translational Sciences. From July 2020 to June 2025 he completed a General Surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. During his residency, from July 2022 to June 2024 he was able to complete the Dartmouth National Implementation Science Program in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

He started his Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Penn in July 2025, and his fields of interest within the specialty are heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

Research

After medical school and prior to starting general surgery residency, Juliano completed a research fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was part of Dr. Hartzell Schaff surgical outcomes research group in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). With focus on the surgical treatment of HOCM, we investigated, described and categorized anomalous papillary muscles, evaluated the clinical significance of the mitral valve leaflet length in these patients as well as the hemodynamic effects of general anesthesia. They also described the improvement in gastrointestinal bleeding with septal myectomy in similarity to patients with aortic stenosis and Heyde syndrome. During his time at the Mayo Clinic, he completed a Postdoctoral Certificate Program in Clinical and Translational Sciences where he received formal training on conducting research studies and statistical analyses. During residency he was able to broaden my research interests and present in national conferences in general thoracic topics such as achalasia, rib fixation, and adult cardiac surgical topics like extubation in the operating room after elective coronary artery bypass grafting.
