Every year a large cohort of Penn Radiology residents attend national radiology meetings including the RSNA and SIR Annual meetings, as well as numerous subspecialty annual meetings, such as ASNR, AUR, CIO, SAR, SIO, and SIIM. The program fully supports residents attendance to conferences at which they present abstracts and/or posters. In 2024-2025, 43 residents presented abstracts or posters at different meetings!
Penn Radiology at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting 2025
RSNA highlights the breadth and depth of radiologic education and innovation in the field. This year, Penn Radiology trainees submitted a wide range of exhibitions including, but not limited to, the clinical implications of imaging findings in various organ systems, medical informatics, and the evolving role of artificial intelligence in clinical practice. Penn faculty delivered exceptional talks, showcasing their work from novel tracers in nuclear medicine to forward-thinking strategies for enhancing breast cancer screening. Beyond the scientific sessions, the conference fostered meaningful interactions among attendees, including an alumni reunion for past and present members of Penn Radiology.
Overall, the conference was a great display of progress in the field as well as a reminder of our shared purpose that continues to drive radiology forward.

ISCT 2025
Dr. Quincy Hathaway (R2) attended the 25th Annual International Society for Computed Tomography Symposium (ISCT 25) in Brussels, Belgium, at the Université Catholique de Louvain. He participated in the opening lightning talk session on Thursday, September 4th, and presented his work, “Paraspinal Muscle Composition as an Opportunistic Screening Tool for Non-Obese Diabetic Participants Using Noncontrast Chest CT: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.” Delivering this research in a concise, 5-minute format to an audience of international experts. Dr. Hathaway highlighted the growing role of CT-based body composition analysis in expanding preventive and opportunistic screening strategies. His session invoked valuable, thought provoking questions regarding his research.
The breadth and depth of the three-day scientific program stood out as truly exceptional experience. The meeting opened with state-of-the-art discussions on photon-counting CT technology, setting the stage for a forward-looking exploration of how innovation is reshaping practice. Sessions on lung cancer screening, CT workforce optimization, and sustainability in radiology showcased how technological progress must be paired with thoughtful implementation strategies. On Saturday, the focus on AI, including talks on deep learning for image formation, large language models in radiology, and AI-driven workflow management, captured the excitement and challenges of integrating advanced computation into clinical practice. Overall, ISCT 2025 was a dynamic blend of cutting-edge science, practical problem-solving, and international collaboration.
Dr. Hathaway states, "I left Brussels not only proud to have shared my work, but also inspired by the momentum across the field and eager to integrate these insights into my ongoing research and clinical practice.”

KCR Conference 2025
The 81st Korean Congress of Radiology (KCR) 2025 conference was held in Seoul, South Korea in September 2025. This year’s conference hosted over 3500 participants representing over 40 countries.
The theme for this year’s KCR was “Unwavering Endeavors” it is a testament to the determination of Radiologists across the world to address challenges in today’s field. The conference showcased cutting-edge research, innovative technologies and opportunities to discuss the hurdles facing radiology today, including workforce shortages.

Society of Pediatric Radiology 2025 Annual Meeting
Penn radiology residents had a wonderful time in Honolulu, Hawaii for the Society of Pediatric Radiology 2025 Annual Meeting. A highlighted talk was one from our very own Abass Noor, MD, discussing the growing issue of increasing birth rates in Africa and lack of adequate pediatric radiology services. Residents presented a variety of different cases, highlighting our exposure to vast pathology at CHOP, ranging from rare cases such as Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome to congenital heart disease.

CIRSE 2025
CIRSE is the annual IR conference for the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe, which took place in Barcelona this year. Several Penn Radiology residents had accepted abstracts at this year’s conference.

Pictured here are Nikki Curnes (PGY6 IR resident) and Rohan Savoor (PGY4 IR resident).
The conference is known for showcasing the wide spectrum of IR with multiple seminars discussing everything from pulmonary embolism thrombectomy and lung tumor ablation to cryoneurolysis and vertebral augmentation.

Conference attendees were able to interact with a Neurostimulator.

Conference attendees were able to see a demo of radio frequency (RF) ablation probes, made by an Italian medical device company. These probes will be used on painful, spinal metastases.
When attendees were not in seminars they were free to explore the beautiful city of Barcelona during the conference, including the fantastic tapas across the city, the Sagrada Familia cathedral, and the local Flamenco theater!

Pictured Rohan Savoor (IR3), Nikki Curnes (IR5), and Alexey Gurevich (DR4).
Dr. Nikki Curnes submitted an abstract describing the evidence behind early exposure to IR clinic and the key steps in implementing a junior IR clinic. Penn Radiology at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Annual Meeting 2025
The Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting was held in Nashville in March 2025, and Penn Radiology had another successful year with seven residents and three independent IR residents attending.

IR2 Srin Shanmugasundaram presented two different oral presentations, one on senior IR resident perspectives on the training process and one on rapid sequence bland embolization of metastatic neuroendocrine tumor in the liver.

IR5 Julia D’Souza presented pilot data from a randomized controlled trial on use of pressure-enabled catheters for chemoembolization of neuroendocrine liver metastases.

IR2 Rohan Savoor presented pilot data from a randomized controlled trial of chemoembolization plus or minus stereotactic radiation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.
ESIR5 Xin Li, IR4 Monica Matsumoto, and ESIR4 Jacy Lundberg also gave oral presentations, and IR4 Elise Seyferth presented a poster; among the independent IR residents, George Fu and Karan Rao gave oral presentations and Joe Kus presented a poster. While the group spent a lot of time learning about the latest science in IR, trying out devices at the industry expo, and meeting new people who work in IR across the country, they also got to enjoy exploring the city and its great music and food scene together (ask them about the mechanical bull!).

ESIR4 Jacy Lundberg, IR4 Monica Matsumoto, IR program director Susan Shamimi-Noori, and IR5 Julia D’Souza attended the annual Women in IR lunch for some inspiring talks and a chance to network with other women in the field.
