Our Fiscal Year 2025 supporters at the Department of Ophthalmology and the Scheie Eye Institute led to several key new initiatives.

Mrs. Kathryn Addis established the Paul D. Addis Award for Outstanding Resident Research in honor of Paul D. Addis. Mrs. Addis shares, “We established the Paul D. Addis Award Fund for Outstanding Resident Research in Mr. Paul D. Addis’ honor. Paul Addis was a visionary leader who was keenly interested in scholarship, gifted in motivating people, and dedicated to improving the world around him. He was very proud of his daughter, Victoria Addis, MD, a Scheie ophthalmologist and teaching faculty member. This award will be presented to the ophthalmology resident who presents the most outstanding research project during the Department of Ophthalmology’s annual Resident Research Day.”

Rick Campbell and the Campbell family’s most recent gift of $1M supported 4 distinct areas, each with a respective fund: the Kristin M. Campbell Community Engagement Fund, the Richard, Maria and Kristin Campbell Resident Wellness Lounge Fund, the Richard G. Campbell Endowed Lectureship Fund, and the Richard G. Campbell Innovation Fund. Mr. Campbell shares, “I was first inspired to give back to because I want to support the incredible clinicians and the work they do. I continue to give back because I believe in Dr. Jeng’s vision for the Department of Ophthalmology and Scheie Eye Institute.”

Stuart Fine, MD, and Mrs. Ellie Fine endowed the Stuart and Ellie Fine Resident Research Fund.

Ms. Jean Sheng established the Jean Sheng Innovation Lab Fund at the Scheie Eye Institute in July 2023. Ms. Sheng reflects, “The purpose of this Fund is to support tele-ophthalmology initiatives and the artificial intelligence program at the Scheie Eye Institute. I believe Dr. Lama Al-Aswad brings progressive thinking, intellectual stimulation, and enthusiasm as she focuses on early disease detection and progression through screenings. This potentially leads to better treatments for eye diseases. Moreover, using AI applications requires a lot of collaboration with other functional departments such as Engineering and Computer Science to maximize resources and learnings while meeting mutual goals.”
